01

Give the overlay one job

A handle overlay exists to connect the content to a creator. It does not need to explain the channel, promote every platform, repeat a slogan, and behave like a full lower third at the same time. Start with the one identifier a viewer should remember, then remove anything that slows recognition.

This is especially important for clips. Viewers may only see the graphic for a few seconds while the scene is moving. A clear platform cue and readable handle usually communicate more than a dense banner filled with labels.

  • Lead with the channel handle.
  • Use one platform icon at a time.
  • Remove labels that repeat information already visible on screen.

02

Build contrast into the asset

Footage changes from frame to frame, so the overlay cannot depend on one background color. Use a crisp outline, shadow, or semi-opaque plate to separate the text from both light and dark scenes. The effect should support the letterforms instead of becoming the first thing viewers notice.

Check contrast on grayscale footage as well as color. If the handle disappears when color is removed, brightness and edge separation may be too similar to the background. Increasing the outline or choosing a lighter text value often fixes the problem more effectively than adding more glow.

03

Design at the size people will see

Judge the overlay inside the final layout, not as a large isolated graphic. A stream viewed in a browser, a vertical video on a phone, and a repost embedded on another platform all reduce the apparent size. Small counters, thin strokes, and decorative details can disappear after scaling and compression.

Use a short test export to find the smallest reliable version. If the handle is not immediately readable, simplify the style before making it larger. Strong typography with fewer effects usually takes less screen space than an elaborate treatment that needs extra size to remain clear.

04

Keep a consistent identity across platforms

Consistency does not require identical files. Keep the handle spelling, general typography, and color family stable, then adapt the icon and position to each destination. A landscape OBS scene and a vertical TikTok edit can feel connected without forcing the same dimensions or placement.

Name exported files clearly so the right version is easy to find. A pattern such as platform-handle-style.png is more useful than a folder full of files named final, final2, and newest. Keep one master choice for color and style, then create platform-specific variants from it.

05

Respect the content around it

The best placement is usually the quietest useful area of the frame. Avoid faces, captions, scoreboards, minimaps, product details, and anything the audience needs to understand the moment. If the focal point moves, position the overlay relative to a stable layout element such as a camera frame.

Review the overlay with motion, alerts, and transitions enabled. A graphic that works on a still frame can collide with a follower notification or scene transition. Small timing or placement changes can protect both elements without adding more visual weight.

Final pass

Quick checklist

  • One clear channel identifier
  • Readable over light and dark footage
  • Tested at final viewing size
  • Consistent naming, color, and typography
  • Placed away from captions and focal content
